How to Automate Website Translation with Smartcat
Smartcat Website Translator is a powerful new tool that enables you - or your website visitor - to translate any page, into any language in realtime. It's the fastest, most affordable way to reach your audience and communicate in their language of choice.
Q&A
Q: Do you have plans to develop an integration for Bitrix CMS?
A: We already support Bitrix CMS. Visit https://www.smartcat.com/integrations/ to see all our integrations.
Q: How do you foresee if the translated text does not fit? For example, if we are thinking about the German language, the words are often much longer than in English
A: Our WYSIWYG UI allows you to immediately preview the page and ensure the text fits. You can then adjust the translated copy; or ask your web developers to adjust the CSS.
Q: How is responsibility for translation handled? Eg can in-country teams do it all themselves? How much do they need to interact with web development team?
A: Once the Smartcat javascript code is placed on the site header, regional teams can handle all the translation and editing, or you can use automatic translation and then tag certain pages as “editable” and put it in the queue for translation teams to review. It should not require any involvement from the web development team, unless there are issues with string length/CSS that impact formatting and display.
Q: Is there a possibility that the translation will break the layout? And if yes what should we do? Specifically, any changes to layout and css settings.
A: Because languages/words vary in length there is the potential for issues in some instances. But if you website has been designed using best practices for fluid layouts/non fixed length fields then the display should be fine.
Q: Does a user see their language automatically based on his browser language?
A: "There are a couple of options:
1. We detect the browser preferred language and translate the page dynamically based on that (or automatically display the existing translation if someone had previously visited the page with that language set in their browser).
2. Alternatively you can activate a mode where people see the default site language first, and then explicitly select the language they want"
Q: "How to hire a linguist for post-editing here? I didn't see the button leading to the marketplace in the interface..."
A: When you go into the Smartcat project management interface you get access to all the Smartcat tools, and can find freelancers right there.
Q: Can you select which machine translation to use on automatic page translation: google or others?
A: This is available by changing the settings of a so-called 'Smart translation profile' that is created and used by Website Translator. See your workspace settings for more info.
Q: Does it also work with scorm files opening in a separate window out of a Learning Management System?
A: We can translate previews issues from LMS as long as they’re URL-accessible. Note we also have direct integrations with LMS systems so you can use Smartcat that way.
Q: Is there standard Glosary available for some specific words in selected language?
A: We don't have any predefined shared/global glossary. We do offer services of creating initial glossaries or importing translations and populating TMs as a part of our Enterprise plan.
Q: Can you use the free version of Smartcat and just pay for the words you might need?
A: Yes, Website Translator (and all of Smartcat) is 100% free to use, forever. In addition you get a monthly allocation of Smartwords which you can use to "power" the page translation - 3K/Mo if you registered with a personal email address, 10K/Mo if you registered with a business email address. We’re working directly with new users to help them get up and running; and that includes providing additional Smartwords at no charge so you can really get a taste for the product. We will follow up directly with you if that works?
Q: Does automatic translation translate also invisible tags like image Title and image Alt?
A: Yes, it does.
Q: If you do a manual translation with the free version do you lose the documents after 45 days?
A: Smartcat accounts and the translated content never expire. Your translations will always be accessible to website visitors, as long as nobody deletes the company account or project file.
